INTI RAYMI

In the great Inca Empire, whose capital city was the Cusco, its so-called governing body's one Inca Yupanqui CPachakuti ), you established the cult in the sunlight and after the temples were built in the sunlight at all the regions and towns of the Tawantinsuyo to worship the gods's one, once the maker was considered and every, so-called p'unchau's creator or Inty Pachakamaq.

This new God joined God Kuntur and Qowar, Choqechinchay or Titi CFelino ) that they were diffuse and known from the origins of the settlement of the chavines.

The chroniclers of the XVIth Centuries and XVII do not make you much room for in their chronicles, why the party of the East Wind interests us they found the necessary information, but the Cronista Juan of Betanzos, author of the Utmost Chronicle And Narración of the Incas, written in 1551, XI of your chronicle brings important information in the chapter to us, In Which it deals with How Inca Yupanqui made the house of the sun and the package of the sun, and of the big fasts, idolatries and offerings in it XI, in her made, under this title the signed  with the numberPág. 244, of your chronicle, you include important information related with the Temple of the sun. That way for example, you tell Betanzos than " you came one day in the morning out of the Cuzco's city; É carrying gentlemen about than there I get tapeworm, it walked that day all the lands than in connection with the city they were and the same thing made another day following; ... And at the town become marry ... and edifying a house in the sunlight ... in the one that they put house in and go once a package was put at the place do the sun reverence and make sacrifices ..." ( Pág.245 ).

Finished to construct the Coricancha's buildings or House of the sun " Inca Yupanqui Had Authority come there the silversmiths that in the city it was, and the best officers giving them every device there at the house of the sun, sent them that maciso and vaciadizo made a little gold boy, that the size went from the little boy of the altor and proportion of a little boy of a year and I undress;... Which the package took long from doing a month, which big sacrifices and fasts had month " ( Pág. 248 ) Betanzos.

Not only Betanzos, but Cieza of León and other chroniclers are mentioning the Package of the sun that is to say the sculpture Zenaida that he represents in the sunlight, male's sculpture that everywhere he will represent in the sunlight, and he will represent the feminine sculpture to the goddess Luna, once wife of the sun was regarded as. These sculptures are in all places declared sacred by the Inca priests and they are buried accompanied of mullu and other offerings. And we took conscience that Incas never presented in the sunlight in circular form and in gold plates, but in package that he shows a masculine sculpture.

And this finished package, Inca Yupanqui commanded that that mister that had indicated for Mayordomo of the sun, that he took the idol, which took an undershirt very richly woven with a lot of reverences and vistióle gold and wool é of various works and next put a powder puff to him ... her yencima put a gold paten to him ... it fitted gold uxutas.

Betanzos describes us with precision than the clothing of the idols that they introduce in the sunlight as the case of the idols found in several contexts closed down of Inca tombs, discovered by archeologists, a lot of examples we have at the UNSAAC's Inca Museum, appropriate of Paucartambo.

These idols that they represent in the sunlight and to the Moon and that they are found in shrines for the Incas they confirm that you never were representing the sun for a metal record.

Farther on the chapter XIV, Betanzos speaks to us of "...The Inca Yupanqui constituted and ordered that a party become in the sunlight, which party and organizing of dried peaches called and named Raymi ".

Inca Yupanqui commanded that they join everything at their house another day in the morning, because they wanted you to become every year in the sunlight.
This way we found out that Inca Yupamqui created the Intip Raymin's party and it provided that every year celebrate this party itself.
Betanzos does not narrate the way how one celebrates.

WHO NOTIFIED IN THIS INTI RAYMI?

Garcilaso in your Real Comments narrates us: " the main captains took part in war in sight retired and the ones that were not in Art Of Warfare, and all the curacas and gentlemen of the whole empire were present at this party why it was venerated and you adored his main god's  sun, and why the Inca in person they attended to this solemn Easter of the sun, it was not nobody that does not call on her.

The curacas, they sent off their representatives, their children, their relatives and noblemen of every region.

The Inca was present and did the first ceremonies like Sacerdote.

The curacas were coming with all their bigger finery, some wore plated gold dresses and silver, other ones were coming with lion skins ( puma ) and because they valued descending from that animal, other ones were coming with big condor's wings ( cuntur ) black and white, the descendants also brag about these birds. Other ones brought masks and these are the Yuncas.
They entered the party with tamborines and the pieces of skins they helped themselves with brought flutes doing crazy, silly and simple gestures.

Each nation brought her weapons they fought with in the wars, that some brought arches and arrows, lances, darts, throwings, clubs, slingshots and axes with. In short each nation were coming that might ".

How THEY CELEBRATE THE INTI RAYMI

Garcilaso tells us than: " ... they took part in fasts, the priests got the flames to sacrifice, preparábanse all without breakfast for the Raymi of the sun, in three days a little of white cooked corn and any one were not eating but grasses. In all this time they did not light fire at the whole city and they abstained from sleeping with your wives.
Once the fast was skipped, the night before the party priests preparábanse to sacrifice flames and you offer them of food for the sun. Of all the nations the offerings were arriving. The Zancu, ground corn mace were prepared. They made biscuits round ( muttus ) of the size of a communis apple ", Garcilaso says.

Adoration in the sunlight

At dawn the Inca accompanied of all his relatives was going out, which was at her order in accordance with the age and dignity of every one to the city's bigger plaza that they call Haucaipata to, affirm Garcilaso. There they waited until the sun go out ... and in showing the sun they all crouched down with the arms extended and opened and sent kisses in the sunlight, next the King stood up remaining the other ones in cuquillas and was taking two big gold ( that they called aquilla ) full brew glasses that they drink ( maize liquor ) ".

" the straight glass offered with the sun and with the left-hand arm relatives. The contents of the straight glass spilled in a gold tinajón ".

" once this ceremony was done they all went to the house of the sun. Only you affiliated the Inca, priests and tall dignitaries, there the Inca did his adoration to the package or image of the sun. The sacrifice of a black flame, to see their auguries and prognostics of the party, the Inca and the Empire was becoming ".

They were placing it with the head toward the Orient, they did not tie his hands and the feet rather had it grasped three or four Indians.

" alive Abríanle for the left-hand side, where they had their hand and the sweetheart with the bellows and the whole the gozgorro served the ball pulling it out with the hand and cutting it. And you had to come out entire from the palate ". Garcilaso ( Pág. 373 ) Real Comments.

New fire

" the fire for that sacrifice had to be new, given of the hand of the sun, as they said.
The one that they took to a big bracelet that they call Chipana. You deemed a concave glass as medal on average orange highly polished. Laying eggs against the sun and to a certain point where the rays of the sun that they came out of the glass they gave altogether, they put some cotton very teaseled to the one that it caught fire to. With that fire given of hands of the sun the sacrifice was burnt off and the whole meat roasted that day and they took the fire to the temple of the sun and to the Ajllawasi where he kept in good condition all year round and the new fire was distributed for all ".

This new fire was preserved all year round and extinguished at the request of the Inca that the new fire sent off.
Right after eating the sancu once ground corn was made out of, they could eat the the rest of the foods that your relatives carried about.

Bigger and detailed reports are in Garcilaso's pages in the Real Comments.

Right after the ceremonies Garcilaso says than: They were going out you dance it, songs and dances with his masks that each nation ( Ayllu ) brought, he drank plenty of maize liquor and he was eating up the potions prepared for this party or Raymi.

In these rituals and celebrations, the Inca and your Priests recited prayers than Molina's chronicler Christopher the Cusqueño, happily you collected Rites and the Incas' Fábulas from your chronicle.

Cieza of León and Guaman Poma fertilize a little more on that was the Inti Raymi, and today does to the good taste and opinion of every Director a modified teatralization. Your scenes are the Coricancha's patio, the Plaza Huacaypata and Saqsaywaman's esplanade.
